LASER & ENERGY

Pico Laser

For pigmentation, acne marks, melasma, dull skin and uneven skin tone

At Clinic RX, Pico Laser treatment is personalised according to your pigmentation type, skin tone, treatment area and individual skin response. Selected Clinic RX locations offer multiple laser platforms, including PicoSure®, Fotona StarWalker® PQX, PicoCare and HELIOS IV 785.

Rather than using the same laser or settings for every patient, the doctor assesses your skin and pigmentation before recommending an appropriate laser approach.

What Is Pico Laser?

What is Pico Laser

“Pico” refers to a picosecond — one trillionth of a second. Pico Laser delivers laser energy in extremely short pulses, allowing suitable pigment in the skin to be targeted very quickly.

These rapid pulses create a photoacoustic effect that fragments targeted pigment into smaller particles. The body then gradually clears these particles through its natural processes, allowing pigmentation to fade progressively over time.

Depending on the treatment mode used, Pico Laser may also support skin renewal and collagen remodelling to improve the appearance of pores and uneven skin texture.

How Does Pico Laser Work?

Pico Laser uses ultra-short pulses of energy to create a photoacoustic effect within targeted pigment. Instead of relying mainly on prolonged heat, the rapid energy helps break pigment into smaller fragments that can gradually be cleared by the body.

Different pigmentation concerns can sit at different depths in the skin. The laser platform, wavelength and treatment settings therefore need to be selected according to the pigmentation type, skin tone, treatment area and individual skin response.

Which Pico Laser Does Clinic RX Use?

Pico Laser is a category of laser technology rather than one single machine. Different systems use different wavelengths, pulse characteristics and treatment modes.

Selected Clinic RX locations offer multiple laser platforms:

PicoSure®
A picosecond laser platform associated with a 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength for selected pigmentation and skin revitalisation applications.
Fotona StarWalker® PQX
A multi-wavelength laser platform used for pigmentation, skin rejuvenation and selected tattoo applications, with treatment selection depending on the pigment and skin characteristics.
PicoCare
A picosecond laser platform providing additional treatment options for pigmentation and selected skin concerns.
HELIOS IV 785

  • Lighter-looking pigmentation and dark spots
  • Faded brown post-acne marks
  • Brighter-looking complexion
  • More even-looking skin tone
  • Improved appearance of pores and texture with suitable treatment modes

Results develop gradually and vary between individuals. Some pigmentation concerns may require several sessions, while recurrent conditions such as melasma may require ongoing management.

Pigmentation can also return due to sun exposure, hormonal factors, inflammation or the underlying pigmentation condition.

Who Is Suitable for Pico Laser?

  • People with freckles, sun spots or selected pigmentation concerns
  • People with flat brown post-acne marks
  • People who want to improve dull or uneven-looking skin tone
  • Selected patients with melasma after medical assessment
  • People who want to improve the appearance of pores or uneven texture with an appropriate treatment mode
  • People who prefer a non-surgical treatment with relatively minimal downtime

Your skin tone, pigmentation pattern, previous treatment history and tendency to develop pigmentation after inflammation should be considered when determining an appropriate treatment plan.

Who May Not Be Suitable for Pico Laser?

  • Active skin infection, open wound, significant irritation or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Recent sunburn or significant tanning
  • An undiagnosed, changing or suspicious pigmented lesion requiring medical assessment
  • A history of pigmentation worsening significantly after skin irritation or laser treatment
  • Medication or a medical condition that may affect laser suitability or healing
  • Recent laser, peel or skin procedures in the same area
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, depending on the treatment protocol and medical assessment

Always inform your doctor about your medical history, medications, skincare products and previous aesthetic treatments before proceeding.

Pico Laser Side Effects & Risks

Pico Laser is generally associated with relatively minimal downtime, but all medical laser procedures carry potential side effects and risks.

  • Mild redness
  • Warmth
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Mild swelling
  • Temporary darkening of targeted pigmentation

Some individuals may develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or temporary lightening of the treated area. Less common reactions may include blistering, prolonged irritation or other unwanted skin reactions. Scarring is uncommon but may occur following significant skin injury.

Is There Downtime After Pico Laser?

Downtime is usually minimal, although recovery depends on treatment intensity and individual skin response. Mild redness, warmth or sensitivity may occur immediately after treatment.

Some targeted pigmentation may temporarily appear darker before gradually lightening. Avoid picking, scrubbing or aggressively exfoliating the treated area.

Pico Laser Aftercare

  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently
  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure
  • Avoid excessive heat for approximately 24–48 hours if advised
  • Temporarily avoid strong acids, retinoids and irritating skincare products as instructed
  • Keep the skin hydrated
  • Avoid picking or aggressively exfoliating treated areas
  • Follow aftercare instructions according to your treatment settings and skin response

How Many Pico Laser Sessions Do I Need?

There is no fixed number of Pico Laser sessions suitable for everyone. The treatment course depends on the type and depth of pigmentation, treatment area, skin tone, treatment settings, individual response and treatment goals.

Superficial pigmentation may respond differently from deeper or recurrent pigmentation. Your progress should be reviewed throughout the treatment course so the plan can be adjusted according to your skin response.

How Much Does Pico Laser Cost in Malaysia?

The price of Pico Laser in Malaysia varies depending on the pigmentation concern, treatment area, treatment protocol and number of sessions recommended.

Treating several isolated pigmentation spots may require a different approach from full-face pigmentation, melasma or more complex pigmentation concerns.

Pico Laser FAQs

What is Pico Laser?

Pico Laser is a laser technology that delivers energy in picosecond pulses — pulses lasting trillionths of a second. These ultra-short pulses create a photoacoustic effect that fragments suitable targeted pigment into smaller particles.

Is Pico Laser good for pigmentation?

Pico Laser may help improve suitable pigmentation concerns including freckles, sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Results depend on pigmentation type and depth, skin tone and individual response.

Can Pico Laser treat melasma?

Pico Laser may be considered for selected patients with melasma. Because melasma is recurrent and can worsen after excessive irritation, treatment should be personalised and combined with consistent sun protection and appropriate homecare.

Does Pico Laser help acne marks?

Pico Laser may help fade flat brown post-acne marks caused by excess pigment. Indented acne scars are different and may require treatments focused more strongly on collagen remodelling.

Can Pico Laser reduce pores?

Certain Pico Laser modes may support skin renewal and collagen remodelling, which can improve the appearance of pores. Pores are normal skin structures and cannot be permanently removed.

Is Pico Laser painful?

Treatment sensation varies. Patients commonly describe warmth, tingling or a light snapping sensation. Comfort measures may be recommended depending on the treatment area and protocol.

Is there downtime after Pico Laser?

Downtime is usually minimal, although temporary redness, warmth or sensitivity may occur. Recovery varies depending on treatment intensity and individual skin response.

How long does Pico Laser take to show results?

Some patients may notice brighter-looking skin earlier, while pigmentation generally fades progressively over the following weeks and treatment sessions.

Can pigmentation come back after Pico Laser?

Yes. Pigmentation can recur due to sun exposure, hormonal triggers, inflammation or the underlying pigmentation condition. Sunscreen, appropriate skincare and maintenance treatment may therefore be recommended.

Which Pico Laser is best for pigmentation?

There is no single Pico Laser platform or setting that is best for every pigmentation concern. The appropriate approach depends on pigmentation type and depth, skin tone, treatment area and individual skin response.
